Out of the blue

Sometimes, out of the blue, comes a little something that takes you by surprise. During a cold morning dog walk, I looked down to rub my cold and cracked hands (must remember hand cream and gloves!) to see something I’ve not seen for a long while. It may not be noticeable to you, and you’ll probably have to look very closely to see it, but for me, it stood out like a contrail in a clear sky. That little faint line that ran across my finger, the indent where for the longest time, my wedding ring had proudly sat.

It was a shock to see it. It did make me stop in my tracks for a second, but what filled my head for the remainder of my walk was not the sadness, anger, or regret that I had once felt when I looked at it. I noticed that what I felt was OK, absolutely OK. More than OK, I felt great and filled with a sense of pride at how far I had come on my journey. My dogs have been a great comfort to me throughout, but today they didn’t notice a thing.
